Hard court tennisWith the first round of action starting today, the world is abuzz with talk of this year’s American Grand Slam. As expected, much is at stake for male and female tennis professionals.

Among the most intriguing tournament stories is that of the male elite. Since the Australian Open of 2005 there has been only one Grand Slam champion outside of the world’s current top three: Federer, Nadal and Djokavic. That was Del Potro at the 2009 U.S. Open, according to ESPN’s tennis history website. Federer, Nadal and Djokavic have all taken three slams in a row during that time, only to be denied the fourth and final to complete the Grand Slam sweep.

Last year’s female champion Samantha Stosur of Australia looks to reclaim her title after a dominant 6-1 6-1 first round annihilation of Petra Martic in less than an hour on court. Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova (or Sugarpova) will see their first rounds of action today as well, according to the US Open website.

The number four ranked American, comeback kid Sam Querrey, has made a surge after recovering from previous injury. Look for Sam to fight, fueled by momentum from his third LA Open win and solid US Open Series play.

The US Open offers live streaming of tournament matches from their website. Tickets can be purchased at the same place. The New York City US Open is renowned for intense matches and fanatic fans. This year, everyone can watch the world’s best at the one and only American Grand Slam.
