Tennis star Venus Williams launched activewear line EleVen at the Sony Ericsson Open in March, with collections tailored to each of the Slams and the Olympics planned for release in the coming months.

Williams named the collection EleVen to signify being better than the best – that is, 11 is higher than a perfect 10. The line offers moderately priced tops and bottoms for both men and women in black, white and pale pink, but with a confidently glitzy flair characteristic of the 21-time Grand Slam winner.

“Simple, strong and iconic are the words I kept in mind when I designed this collection,” said Williams on her website, elevenbyvenus.com. “I want people to feel they can express themselves with EleVen, no matter what their body shape is.”

Set to compete at this year’s French Open, which runs May 27 through June 10, Williams’ lifetime accomplishments in the sport include Olympic gold medals and serving a ball at 129 mph, the fastest a woman has ever recorded. Known in the tennis world for her daring and controversial on-court apparel, Williams pursued fashion off the court by earning a degree in fashion design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and working with designers such as Ralph Lauren and Diane Von Furstenberg en route to designing her own line. EleVen is the only sportswear line designed by a professional athlete.

“I worked hard to make this collection about who I am,” said Williams. “I might wear all white, but with a big crystal necklace. The whole idea is to be classic but add a little funkiness to make it your own.”

Classic colors and bold lines characterize the pieces in EleVen, such as a solid light pink polo or white-on-black geometrically patterned leggings — all modeled by Williams herself on her website. An added feature is small printed notes with inspirational messages hidden inside the garments, encouraging players to “Oh and Oh beat ‘em” and “Bring it.”

EleVen can be found at pro shops, boutiques, tenniswarehouse.com and the elevenbyvenus.com website.
